How to Propagate Pothos from Cuttings

⏰ Time needed: 5 minutes to take cutting, 2-4 weeks to root

Step 1: Choose the Right Stem

Look for a healthy vine with at least 4-6 leaves. You want a stem section that has a node — the small bump where leaves attach to the stem. This is where roots will grow from.

Avoid stems that are yellowing, crispy, or showing signs of pest damage.

Step 2: Make the Cut

Using clean scissors or pruning shears, cut the stem about 1/4 inch below the node. Your cutting should be 4-6 inches long with 2-4 leaves.

Pro tip: Cut at a 45-degree angle — it gives more surface area for the cutting to absorb water.

Step 3: Remove Lower Leaves

Remove the leaves that would sit below the water line. Leave 2-3 leaves at the top — these will feed the cutting through photosynthesis while roots develop.

Step 4: Place in Water

Fill a clear glass jar with room-temperature water. Place your cutting in so the node is submerged but leaves aren't touching the water. Put it somewhere with bright, indirect light.

Change the water every 3-5 days to prevent bacteria growth and keep oxygen fresh.

Step 5: Wait for Roots

Patience time! Roots typically appear in 2-4 weeks. You'll see them growing from the node into the water. Once roots are 2-3 inches long, your cutting is ready to plant in soil.

Step 6: Plant in Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix and keep the soil lightly moist for the first week. This helps the roots adjust from water to soil. Then switch to your normal Pothos watering schedule.
